CAN HUMANS SENSE MAGNETIC FIELDS? People who claim to experience headaches and other sensations during geomagnetic storms are routinely dismissed as "kooks." Yet new research by geophysicist Joe Kirschvink of Caltech shows that rotating magnetic fields can alter human brain waves. If this research holds up to scrutiny and verification, humans may be added to the list of other creatures such as beesdogs, and birds that can sense the magnetism all around us. Read all about it.

GREEN FLASH ON THE RED PLANET: Occasionally, when the sun sets behind the waves of the ocean, observers witness an emerald pulse of light just above the vanishing solar disk. Once thought to be a fable, the "green flash" is now known to be real, and is a regular entry on bucket lists. The phenomenon, however, is not limited to the sun. Yesterday, Peter Rosén of Stockholm, Sweden, observed a type of green flash on Mars:


"I was observing Mars through my 9-inch Celestron telescope," says Rosén. "It was setting, only 3° above the horizon, and the atmospheric turbulence was extreme. Suddenly I saw the upper part of the planet getting distorted and turning green."

"It looked just like a green flash on the sun," he says.

The phenomenon Rosén photographed is related to the ordinary twinkling of stars. Near the horizon, blobs of turbulent air refract and distort light, some colors more so than others, separating red from green and blue. The puff of green rising from the martian disk is a result of this type of chromatic turbulence.

Green flashes on the sun happen for different, but related reasons: According to Les Cowley's atmospheric optics web site: "The classical green flash relies on a mirage to magnify small differences in refraction between red and green light. The mirage occurs when there is warm air immediately over the ocean and the air temperature gradient changes rapidly with height."

"I have observed and photographed solar green flashes on multiple occasions," says Rosén, "but this was the first time I caught a green flash on the red planet!"

CrISS-cross SUN: To catch the International Space Station flying in front of the sun requires split-second timing, precise geo-location, and a fair amount of luck. On June 26th, astrophotographer Fins Eirexas did it twice. He sends this picture from Santiago de Compostela in the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula:


"The space station 'crISS-crossed' the sun in a double transit about 40 km from my home," he says. "One pass happened in the morning (09:45 UT), the other in the afternoon (16:12 UT). Both lasted no more than a fraction of a second."

Eirexas knew when and where to look thanks to predictions from it out. The International Space Station could be the only spot you'll see on the sun for quite a while.

WHAT'S AROUND THE BEND? The Earth-facing side of the sun is quiet, but the farside is not. We know because on Saturday something exploded there, hurling a cloud of plasma over the sun's eastern limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a movie of the high-flying debris:


Within a few days, the underlying blast site should reveal itself as the sun's rotation brings the active region over the horizon. We shall see if it is a large sunspot or something less threatening.

Until then, the visible disk of the sun remains blank and the odds of an Earth-directed explosion are low. NOAA forecasters say there is no more than a 1% chance of strong solar flares on June 28th. Solar flare alerts: text or voice

 All Sky Fireball Network

Every night, a network of NASA all-sky cameras scans the skies above the United States for meteoritic fireballs. Automated software maintained by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office calculates their orbits, velocity, penetration depth in Earth's atmosphere and many other characteristics. Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.

These measurements are based on regular space weather balloon flights: learn more.

Approximately once a week, and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus fly "space weather balloons" to the stratosphere over California. These balloons are equipped with radiation sensors that detect cosmic rays, a surprisingly "down to Earth" form of space weather. Cosmic rays can seed cloudstrigger lightning, and penetrate commercial airplanes. Our measurements show that someone flying back and forth across the continental USA, just once, can absorb as much ionizing radiation as 2 to 5 dental X-rays. For example, here is the data from a flight on Oct. 22, 2015:


Radiation levels peak at the entrance to the stratosphere in a broad region called the "Pfotzer Maximum." This peak is named after physicist George Pfotzer who discovered it using balloons and Geiger tubes in the 1930s. Radiation levels there are more than 80x sea level.

Note that the bottom of the Pfotzer Maximim is near 55,000 ft. This means that some high-flying aircraft are not far from the zone of maximum radiation. Indeed, according to the Oct 22th measurements, a plane flying at 45,000 feet is exposed to 2.79 uSv/hr. At that rate, a passenger would absorb about one dental X-ray's worth of radiation in about 5 hours.

The radiation sensors onboard our helium balloons detect X-rays and gamma-rays in the energy range 10 keV to 20 MeV. These energies span the range of medical X-ray machines and airport security scanners.
