Astrology Forecast for 2016: Redefining Our Perceptions of Reality
By Carmen Di Luccio, 01/11/2016
Hello 2016! Here is an overview of the astrology forecast for this upcoming year:
Mercury Retrograde In Earth Signs
The infamous ‘Mercury Retrograde’, which is known as a time where things can sometimes get a little bit wonky, is now moving into Earth signs until September 2017. Starting with Capricorn in January, moving along to Taurus in the mid-spring, and then Virgo in late summer. Mercury retrograding in the Earth element signifies a time where we are reorienting our minds with the qualities of these signs and how we handle our relationship with the material world. Earth is grounded, solid, and realistic. When we cultivate its qualities within us, it helps us to be practical, dependable, and resourceful.
First occurring In Capricorn from January 5th-25th, this edition of Mercury retrograde will assist us in making changes to help us in our goals, structures, and helping us get a better grip on our responsibilities. Alternatively, some people may completely change their goals and career aspirations.
In Taurus from April 28th-May 22nd, this a time where can be getting a new perspective into what it is that we truly value. Also, this can be a time when we can making some changes with our relationship to money and resources. This could also be a time when many people may feel the need to connect with the Earth in new ways. For example; it could be by spending more time outdoors such as gardening, hiking. etc.
In Virgo from August 30th – September 22nd, a theme of making changes in how we organize our lives, our routine, our duties, and how care for ourselves. It can also be a time to to sharpen our skills. Virgo is also associated with health, and therefore some people may find themselves in a situation where new conditions and/or insights prompts them to make better lifestyle choices. A Solar eclipse will also occur in this sign during this Retrograde which will intensify the need for change and new beginnings related to this sign. For some people, this could be related to any developments that started in August/September 2015 and have been growing since.
Mars Retrograde: April 17th – June 29th
Mars retrograde isn’t as common as Mercury retrograde. It happens roughly every two years, and when it does happen, it is kind of a big deal. Mars represents action, male energy, and assertiveness. It also associated with anger, aggression, and fighting. When a planet goes retrograde, the energy goes inward and it is ultimately a time where we are recalibrating how we work with the qualities of that planet. While Mars retrograde can make some people more passive, it can also create inner tension among assertive and aggressive type of people.
For any Mars-type people (who strongly carry the qualities of Mars) or those who are born under the Aries or Scorpio Sun sign (which are ruled by Mars), it can be more challenging to learn to work with this energy inwardly. Meditation, yoga, qi gong, or any other similar modalities can help one to align with this energy better so that it doesn’t manifest into anxiety or tension.
Any Mars-type conflicts (anger, aggression, fighting) that occur during this period will likely create some kind of awareness, potentially through undesirable circumstances, of a need to change any aggressive tendencies.
Saturn In Sagittarius
Saturn first entered this sign last winter and then re-entered in the Fall. However, this will be its first full year in Sagittarius and it will be forming square aspects with both Neptune and Jupiter, twice each.
This is the planet of structure, responsibility, discipline, and contraction. As the furthest orbiting planet visible to the naked eye, it rules over limitations and is also associated with ‘boundaries’ which is symbolically signified by its rings. Saturn is concerned with what is ‘real’ and ‘defined’. Therefore, whatever sign it transits through, it will help us to get realistic and redefine different aspects of what the specific sign is associated with.
Sagittarius is an expansive sign as an explorer and seeker of truth. It is associated with philosophies, spiritual beliefs, foreign countries, and overall ‘big picture’ perspective. As an optimistic and idealistic sign, it can also have a tendency to overlook certain facts and details. Another Sagittarian quality is the tendency to ‘overdo’ or ‘overindulge’ due to the expansive qualities expressed through its ruler Jupiter.
Saturn contracts this expansive energy of Sagittarius. Metaphorically speaking, it is like an airplane that needs to delay its flight because some of the old parts are faulty and need to be upgraded. Saturn represents installing parts that are the better engineered so that the airplane can operate much smoother then ever before.
This is a time where we need to get real about what is true and what is not. Where are the ‘holes’ in both our individual and collective viewpoints? This is a time of redefining our perspectives by bringing orderliness and structure into the equation. This will last until the end of 2017, however, I wanted to emphasize this because most of the major astrological aspects happening this year have to do with Saturn.
Jupiter in Virgo
As mentioned above, Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius and it carries the same expansive qualities. It wants to grow, learn, and experience. Since last August, it has been in Virgo, the sign of work, skills, service, health, organization, and routine. It is a grounded sign that is concerned with the duties, details, and tasks of the physical world.
As an expansive planet, Jupiter is bringing some type of growth in the Virgoan aspects of our lives. This is an excellent opportunity to learn new skill sets and grow in our capabilities. Some people may experience this as getting busier with work and duties, while other may experience this as a time where they are learning more about health and caring for themselves. Jupiter here can also make us feel overwhelmed and perhaps even scattered with our commitments and responsibilities, depending on how it is handled. Much of it may have to do with whether or not we are implementing new methods or routines that may be required as part of the growth process.
Saturn Square Jupiter in Virgo
In early August 2015, Saturn formed its first square with Jupiter when they were in the fixed signs of Scorpio and Leo, respectively. This year they will continue their square in Sagittarius and Virgo.
Saturn is restricting the expansiveness of Sagittarius and keeping things real, Jupiter the expander is increasing our Earthly duties. When they clash again this year, we may find ourselves in a situation where we need to work with the energy of these two planets constructively. A defined perspective from Saturn has the ability to restrict or create awareness of any ‘overdoing’ that Jupiter is facilitating in Virgo. In some cases, Saturn can even bring on some hard lessons. The most tension between these two planets will occur in the period from early March until early June.
Saturn Square Neptune in Pisces
Saturn made its first square aspect with Neptune in late November 2015, but had been building up slowly in the months leading up to it. This energy is still subtly existent in the early part of the year but will start to build up again in the beginning of spring, and then it will be really strong in the summer. It will finish by the end of September.
Neptune is a co-ruler of Pisces, and in this sign it strongly represents themes of selflessness, empathy, oneness, mysticism, spiritual connection, the collective unconscious, imagination, and emotional healing. It is also associated with confusion, inadequacy, deception, and escapism. Both this planet and sign also carry a dissolving, unorderly, and undefined energy.
Saturn in a square aspect with Neptune can reflect brings issues around boundaries. There can be circumstances that come up where we may need to compromise or creatively resolve these situations. Finding a way where our boundaries are being respected yet at the same time we are being considerate of some sort of need for a new type of integration. (This reflects the Syrian refugee crisis last fall)
Another way this could manifest is that we need to accept some sort of new understanding due to our inner knowing. Saturn in Sagittarius here can represent ‘defending’ or ‘unwilling to change’ our beliefs, but then Neptune in Pisces comes along and completely dissolves your paradigm or belief systems. What is real and what is not real? Saturn calls for discernment but Neptune wants to let you in on something that is beyond ‘physical’. Too much on the Saturn side can be unyielding and rigid, but too much on the Neptune side can make one delusional or inadequate.
Jupiter Going Into Libra, Then Squares Pluto
As Jupiter shifts from Virgo into Libra on September 9th, the expansiveness moves into relationships and relating in general, as well as creating balance, fairness, and equality. This will be an opportunity to grow and learn through our relationships as well as a time where we are more open minded to learn from other perspectives overall.
On November 24th, Jupiter will be making it’s first of three square aspects to Pluto, with the other two occurring in 2017. Pluto is associated with transformation and power, however, when in the sign of Capricorn it has a very ‘controlling’ tone. Jupiter in Libra wants grow in the realm of relating, fairness, and equality, while Pluto in Capricorn wants to keep control of everything and is less open to different viewpoints. Pluto here can also represent being obsessive about ambitions, old structures, and traditions. However, when the energies of these two planets are working together harmoniously it can manifest tremendous transformations in our structures to accommodate new viewpoints.
