The Pearls That Came to Shine

'THE PEARLS THAT CAME TO SHINE'
The days go by, collecting sighs
and the lows can sometimes drown the highs,
for it isn't always cheer we hear
but we understand that we're to veer;
towards a more revered embrace
where fires burn in open grates,
and a look is worn that says "hurrah,
at last the rising path's not barred!"
Groans and moans and aching bones
have struggled on and felt alone,
and they haven't seen or heard a thing
that makes their creaking timbers sing,
but they carry on, they sway and bend
because they know they can't pretend,
that they can't remain inside the walls
of a lying city set to fall.
Still they give and take deep breaths
even though there's not much left,
for they're immersed in a heightened tale
one devoid of mask and veil,
and they're devoutly sworn to swing
on vines reserved for those that bring,
a deeper meaning to the days
for these pearls came to shine, not graze.
